David Garrick

1717–1779

David Garrick (1717–1779) was the foremost English actor of the eighteenth century and manager of the Drury Lane Theatre. He also wrote prologues, epilogues, epigrams and songs, among them "Heart of Oak".

The 3 poems here are the pieces printed under his name in Frederick Locker's Lyra Elegantiarum (London: E. Moxon, 1867), an anthology of vers de société and vers d'occasion by deceased authors; the texts follow that first edition.

  1. Come, come, my good shepherds, our flocks we must shear
  2. Ye fair married dames, who so often deplore
  3. Advice to the Marquis of Rockingham
  4. To Mr. Gray, on his Odes
  5. Hearts of Oak
