Restoration & Augustan

Robert Gould

d. 1709?

Robert Gould (died about 1709) was an English poet and satirist of the Restoration. Little is securely known of his early life; he is generally said to have risen from domestic service in a noble household, and to have won the patronage of the Earl of Dorset and other grandees, several of whom he addresses in his verse.

He made his name with Love Given O'er (1682), a savage satire on women that provoked printed replies, followed by The Play-House (1685) and A Satyr upon Man. His collected Poems, chiefly consisting of Satyrs and Satyrical Epistles (1689) joined these to love songs, verse letters, funeral elegies and pindarick odes. He also wrote plays, and a posthumous Works appeared in 1709.
