Thomas Hardy

1840–1928

Thomas Hardy (1840–1928) is best known as a novelist, but after finishing Jude the Obscure in 1895 he devoted the rest of his long career chiefly to poetry.

His verse is plain-spoken and often bleak, preoccupied with chance, loss, rural Wessex life, and the death of his first wife Emma, which produced some of his most admired elegies.
