Benjamin Keach

1640–1704

Benjamin Keach (1640–1704) was an English Baptist preacher, born at Stoke Hammond in Buckinghamshire. He was imprisoned and put in the pillory in 1664 for his children's primer 'The Child's Instructor', and from 1668 he served as pastor of a Baptist congregation in Southwark, London, which later met at Horsleydown.

Keach wrote prolifically in prose and verse. 'Spiritual Melody, containing near three hundred sacred hymns' (1691) was among the first collections of hymns written for congregational singing in English Baptist worship, a move that was controversial in his own day. The hymns, plain in diction and built on scriptural images, are set out in nine parts.
