American
Amy Lowell
Amy Lowell (1874–1925) was born into a prominent Brookline, Massachusetts family; she was the sister of A. Lawrence Lowell, later president of Harvard. Educated privately, she came to poetry in her late twenties, and her first book, A Dome of Many-Coloured Glass, appeared in 1912, when she was thirty-eight.
After Sword Blades and Poppy Seed (1914), which mixed rhymed verse, unrhymed cadence and narrative poems, she became the energetic leader of the Imagist movement in America, editing the anthologies Some Imagist Poets (1915–17) and lecturing widely. She also wrote the critical works Six French Poets (1915) and Tendencies in Modern American Poetry (1917), and a biography of John Keats; she died in 1925.
