Mir Soz

c. 1720–1798

The book says that Mir Soz was of Bokhari ancestry, had to leave his country in time of peril in the dress of a fakir, and came to Lucknow, where he became tutor to the Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula.

The 2 pieces given here are drawn from Hindustani Lyrics (London: The Sufi Publishing Society, 1919), in the English verse of Inayat Khan and Jessie Duncan Westbrook. They are free renderings, not literal translations, and the original Urdu poems are untitled; each is named here by its first line.

  1. To whom shall I relate
  2. In spring, O Bulbul, go not in thy grief
