Ssŭ-k’ung T’u

837–908

Ssŭ-k’ung T’u (837–908) was Secretary to the Board of Rites and retired from that post to lead a contemplative life. L. Cranmer-Byng calls him perhaps the most Chinese of the poets he translated and one of the most philosophical.

The poems here are L. Cranmer-Byng’s versions in A Lute of Jade (1909), given with the poet’s name as spelled in those books.

  1. Return of Spring
  2. The Colour of Life
  3. Set Free
  4. Fascination
  5. Tranquil Repose
  6. The Poet’s Vision
  7. Despondent
  8. Embroideries
  9. Concentration
  10. Motion
