Friedrich Leopold zu Stolberg-Stolberg
Friedrich Leopold, Count zu Stolberg-Stolberg (1750–1819) was a German poet, translator and diplomat, born at Bramstedt in Holstein. A member of the Göttingen Hainbund and a friend of Klopstock and Goethe in his youth, he wrote odes, ballads and verse dramas, and translated Homer and Aeschylus.
In 1800 he became a Roman Catholic, to the scandal of many of his friends, and spent his later years writing a large history of the Christian religion. "Ode to a Mountain-torrent" is given here in George Borrow's English version of 1826.
