Ella Wheeler Wilcox

1850–1919

Ella Wheeler Wilcox (1850–1919) was an American poet and journalist, born in Johnstown Center, Wisconsin. She began publishing verse as a girl and became one of the most widely read popular poets of her day, writing for newspapers and magazines as well as in book form.

Poems of Passion (1883), a collection of her love poems, drew a storm of public criticism for its frankness and, with it, a great many readers; Maurine and Other Poems appeared in 1888. Her best-known lines, such as “Laugh, and the world laughs with you” (from “Solitude”), became proverbial in English.
