Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf

1700–1760

Nikolaus Ludwig, Count von Zinzendorf (1700–1760), born in Dresden, was the patron of the Moravian community at Herrnhut and later a bishop of the Moravian Church. He was a prolific hymn-writer, and his hymns circulated in the Herrnhuth hymn-book that the Wesleys knew.

The pieces here are John Wesley’s English translations of 1738–42, in which Osborn’s footnotes name Zinzendorf as the author of the German original (citing the Herrnhuth Collection and Knapp’s Evangelischer Liederschatz). Osborn sometimes hedges the identification with “compare” or “is said to be”.
