Agamemnon

The Oresteia

by Aeschylus

Translated by E. D. A. Morshead (1881)

Clytemnestra waits through ten years for her husband Agamemnon to return from Troy, and greets him with purple tapestries and fair words. The captive prophetess Cassandra foresees the murder that awaits them both in the palace; Clytemnestra kills the king in his bath, and takes up the rule of Argos with her lover Aegisthus.
