The Haunted House

by Plautus

Translated by Henry Thomas Riley (1852)

While old Theuropides is abroad, his son Philolaches squanders the estate on revels and on buying a music-girl her freedom; when the father returns unexpectedly, the quick-witted slave Tranio saves the day by claiming that the house is haunted and has been shut up, then ensnares the old man in one lie after another until the truth comes out and the young men are forgiven.
