Pseudolus

The Cheat

by Plautus

Translated by Henry Thomas Riley (1852)

A comedy of intrigue: the slave Pseudolus promises his young master Calidorus that he will win back the girl Phoenicium, whom the pimp Ballio has sold to a soldier, and he does it by tricking pimp, soldier's messenger and his own master alike. Cicero records that Plautus himself counted it among his best plays.
