Supernus ales nuntiat

by Anonymous Latin Hymns c. 5th–15th century

Translated by Edward Caswall (1849) · From Lyra Catholica (1849)

Religion

The Angel spake the word
“Hail, Thou of women blest!”
From highest Heav’n the Godhead comes,
And fills her virgin breast.

Maiden! how great henceforth
Thy dignity shall be!
The Son of God becomes thine own,
This day conceiv’d by Thee.

This day the Holy Ghost,
From thy all-sinless blood,
Moulds in thy womb that Flesh divine
Of the life-giving Word;

Whereby we babes the meat
Of elder ones obtain;
And He, who Angels feeds as God,
Feeds men, as God made Man.
