Summer and his Pleasures

by Anonymous (Middle High German) c. 1200 (composition of the Nibelungenlied)

Translated by Frank C. Nicholson (1907) · From Old German Love Songs (1907)

Nature

"Nought I deem so worthy, nought I hold above
The fair bright roses and the love of him I love.
The little birds sing sweet;
They sing in the forest; that glads men's hearts to hear.
But if my lover comes not, the summer brings me little cheer."
