Death & Dying

Epitaph XI. — For Gunes

by Decimus Magnus Ausonius c. AD 310 – c. 395

Translated by Hugh G. Evelyn-White (1919–21) · From Book VI. — Epitaphs on the Heroes who took part in the Trojan War

Death & Dying

The sea holds Gunes; this tomb, his name but not his body. His fame dwells amongst men; his spirit is returned above. All elements unite to form one tomb for so great a leader. Which? Heaven, earth, and sea, and the breath of men.
