Living

Epigram LXXV

by Bhartrihari traditionally 5th–7th century AD

Translated by Paul Elmer More (1898) · From A Century of Indian Epigrams (1898)

Living

Now Sorrow like a threefold chain
Grapples our heart with triple pain:
And one, the strongest bond I think,
Ourselves we forge and rivet link by link.

Another many-fingered Chance
Still weaves with daily circumstance;
And one some strange malignant Might
Drops clanking round us from an unknown height.
