Love

Epigram 55: Theocritus looks black, ’tis true

by Callimachus c. 310 – c. 240 BC

Translated by H. W. Tytler (1793; Bohn 1856) · From Works of Callimachus (Tytler, 1793)

Love

Theocritus looks black, ’tis true ;
But then his face is comely too:
If he hate me, your love is such,
You hate him just four times as much ;
But if he love, you love him then
Beyond the love of mortal men.
And such, I swear, O mighty Jove,
By sacred Ganymede above,
The friendship once to him you bore,
And such the love; I speak no more.
