Death & Dying

Book VII, 104: On Arcesilaus

by Diogenes Laertius 3rd century AD (Paton’s date)

Translated by W. R. Paton (1916–18) · From The Greek Anthology (Loeb, vol. II, 1917)

Death & Dying

Arcesilaus, why did you drink so much wine, and so unsparingly as to slip out of your senses? I am not so sorry for you because you died as because you did violence to the Muses by using immoderate cups.

This translation is printed as prose in its source edition.
