Social Commentaries

Of little pitie

by Sir John Harington 1560–1612

From The Most Elegant and Witty Epigrams (1618), Book 4

Social Commentaries

WHen noble Essex, Blount and Danuers died,
One saw them suffer, that had heard them tried:
And sighing, said; When such braue souldiers dye,
Ist not great pitie, thinke you? No, said I:
There is no man of sense in all the citie,
Will say, 'Tis great, but rather little pitie.
