Religion

Of a Precise Cobler, and an ignorant Curat

by Sir John Harington 1560–1612

From The Most Elegant and Witty Epigrams (1618), Book 1

Religion

A Cobler, and a Curat, once disputed
Afore a Iudge, about the Queenes Iniunctions,
And sith that still the Curat was confuted,
One said 'twas fit that they two changed functions.
Nay, said the Iudge, that motion much I lothe,
But if you will, wee'le make them Coblers both.
