A Strong Hand

by Aaron Hill 1685–1750

From The Home Book of Verse, ed. Burton Egbert Stevenson (1912)

Relationships

Tender-handed stroke a nettle,
And it stings you for your pains;
Grasp it like a lad of mettle,
And it soft as silk remains:

So it is with these fair creatures,
Use them kindly, they rebel;
But be rough as nutmeg graters,
And the rogues obey you well.
