Love

Amid the Myrtles

by Judah Halevi c. 1075–1141

Translated by Nina Salaman (1924) · From Selected Poems of Jehudah Halevi (Jewish Publication Society, 1924)

Love

The bridal pair stand amid the myrtles,
Sending forth pure myrrh on every side.
The myrtle desireth the sweetness of their fragrance,
And spreadeth his wings like a cherub above them.
The myrtle thinketh to cover their fragrance,
But the sweetness of their spices overwhelmeth his scent.
