Love

Why risest thou, O Sun

by Judah Halevi c. 1075–1141

Translated by Nina Salaman (1924) · From Selected Poems of Jehudah Halevi (Jewish Publication Society, 1924)

Love

Why risest thou, O sun, why shinest thou?
The turn of Abiljail’s daughter hath come.
She shameth the face of the sun with the splendour of her form,
She hindereth the host of heaven from their work.
She chooseth not to dwell in the heavens above,
But maketh her heaven of the myrtle tree.
