Love
If You No Longer Love Me
From Works and Life, ed. Forster, vol. VIII (1876)
Love
If you no longer love me,
To friendship why pretend?
Unworthy was the lover,
Unworthy be the friend.
I know there is another
Of late prefer'd to me:
Recover'd is my freedom,
And you again are free.
I've seen the bird that summer
Deluded from her spray
Return again in winter
And grieve she flew away.
