Book XII, Epigram 4 (Ker)
Translated by Walter C. A. Ker (1919–20) · From Epigrams (Loeb, 1919–20)
What Maecenas, a knight sprung from ancestral kings,! as to Flaccus and Varius and illustrious Maro, this chattering fame and antique records shall tell the nations and provinces, Priscus Terentius, that you were to me. You create my genius, you create whatever power I seem to show; you give me the free man's right of idleness.
