Death & Dying

I Stood beside Her Grave

by Sándor Petőfi 1823–1849

Translated by William N. Loew (1912) · From Cypress Leaves from the Grave of Dear Ethel

Death & Dying

I stood beside her grave where she at rest...
Exhausted, I my arms crossed o'er my breast.

A statue like I stood beneath the sky.
I looked upon a grave with tearful eye.

The seaman stands upon the ocean's shore
And glances o'er the waves which loudly roar.

A beggar made of him the angry sea,
He bows his head at fate's cruel decree.
