Love

Fragment-poem 26 (Way)

by Sappho c. 630 – c. 570 BC

Translated by Arthur S. Way (1920) · From Sappho and the Vigil of Venus (1920)

Love

A daughter have I: she is fair, is fair!
Graceful and tall does my darling stand
As a sunflower gleaming with golden hair!
O, all the treasures of Morning-land
Were but as dust in the balance laid,
Beside her, my Cleïs, my little maid!

Way weaves several fragments in the same metre into one connected poem (his preface); the joins are his.
