By-Play

by Shi Jing (The Book of Songs) poems c. 1000–600 BC; compilation traditionally ascribed to Confucius

Translated by William Jennings (1891) · From The Shi King (Jennings, 1891), Part I, Book vii

Living

For the hill the myrtle-tree,
For the swamp the water-lily.
No Tse-tu see I for me,
Only some one crazed and silly!

For the hill the stately fir,
For the swamp the dragon-vetch.
No Tse-ch'ung see I astir,
Only you,— sly little wretch!
