Maxims of Theognis: The man-of-rank weds the woman-without-fame
Translated by Rev. J. Banks (Bohn, 1856) · From Hesiod, Callimachus and Theognis (Bohn, 1856)
The man-of-rank weds the woman-without-fame, he himself, look you, leads her home, though he knows that she is base-born, because he is induced by her riches; for stern necessity urges him on, which also makes a man’s mind wretched.
This translation is printed as prose in its source edition.
Codex Note
Literal prose translation by the Rev. J. Banks (Bohn, 1856), printed as prose: the plain-sense companion to Frere’s verse version. Banks’s hyphenated compounds are his own.
