Maxims of Theognis: Known, look you, is poverty
Translated by Rev. J. Banks (Bohn, 1856) · From Hesiod, Callimachus and Theognis (Bohn, 1856)
Known, look you, is poverty, even though it be strange, for it neither comes to the market nor the law-suits. For everywhere it has the lesser share, and everywhere ’tis mocked: everywhere also, wheresoever it may be, it is equally hostile.
This translation is printed as prose in its source edition.
Codex Note
Literal prose translation by the Rev. J. Banks (Bohn, 1856), printed as prose: the plain-sense companion to Frere’s verse version. Banks’s hyphenated compounds are his own.
