Maxims of Theognis: None like me can I

by Theognis of Megara fl. 6th century BC

Translated by Rev. J. Banks (Bohn, 1856) · From Hesiod, Callimachus and Theognis (Bohn, 1856)

Living

None like me can I find, when I seek a trusty associate, in whom there is no guile. But when I have come to the touch-stone I am rubbed beside baser metal, as gold beside lead, and a mind of superiority is in me.

This translation is printed as prose in its source edition.
