Maxims of Theognis: It is not hard to
Translated by Rev. J. Banks (Bohn, 1856) · From Hesiod, Callimachus and Theognis (Bohn, 1856)
It is not hard to blame one’s neighbour, no, nor to praise him: these things are a care to mean men. And mean men do not choose to be silent, prating mischief rather, but the noble know how to preserve moderation in all things.
This translation is printed as prose in its source edition.
Codex Note
Literal prose translation by the Rev. J. Banks (Bohn, 1856), printed as prose: the plain-sense companion to Frere’s verse version. Banks’s hyphenated compounds are his own.
