Maxims of Theognis: A single individual, look you
Translated by Rev. J. Banks (Bohn, 1856) · From Hesiod, Callimachus and Theognis (Bohn, 1856)
A single individual, look you, troubles neither one-well-affected, nor his foe, unless he meet with a serious matter. Many are friends and comrades over the bowl, but fewer in a serious matter.
Codex Note
Literal prose translation by the Rev. J. Banks (Bohn, 1856), printed as prose: the plain-sense companion to Frere’s verse version. Banks’s hyphenated compounds are his own.
