Fragment XXX: My friend, the feeling you can not correct
Translated by John Hookham Frere (1842; Bohn 1856) · From Fragments of Theognis (Frere, 1842)
Social Commentaries
My friend, the feeling you can not correct
Will work at last a ruinous effect,
To disappoint your hopes. You cannot, learn
To bear unpleasant things with unconcern ;
Nor work without repugnance or disgust
In tasks that ought to be perform’d, and must.
