Maxims of Theognis: Now I will counsel men
Translated by Rev. J. Banks (Bohn, 1856) · From Hesiod, Callimachus and Theognis (Bohn, 1856)
Now I will counsel men for their-common-good, that every one enjoying the bright bloom of youth may also entertain sound thoughts in his heart, to enjoy the good, each of his own possessions: for twice to grow-young is not given by the gods, neither is there to mortal men an escape from death: but baneful and destructive old age overpowers them, and touches the tops of their heads.
This translation is printed as prose in its source edition.
Codex Note
Literal prose translation by the Rev. J. Banks (Bohn, 1856), printed as prose: the plain-sense companion to Frere’s verse version. Banks’s hyphenated compounds are his own.
