Maxims of Theognis: Timagoras, ’tis hard for one-seeing-from-far
Translated by Rev. J. Banks (Bohn, 1856) · From Hesiod, Callimachus and Theognis (Bohn, 1856)
Timagoras, ’tis hard for one-seeing-from-far, to understand the temper of many, even though he be wise. For some have meanness disguised by riches; and others rank by ruinous poverty.
Codex Note
Literal prose translation by the Rev. J. Banks (Bohn, 1856), printed as prose: the plain-sense companion to Frere’s verse version. Banks’s hyphenated compounds are his own.
