Maxims of Theognis: If I but drink, I
Translated by Rev. J. Banks (Bohn, 1856) · From Hesiod, Callimachus and Theognis (Bohn, 1856)
If I but drink, I care not for spirit-wasting poverty, nor hostile men, who speak ill of me. But I lament for delightsome youth, which is failing me: and I bewail troublesome old-age coming-upon-me.
Codex Note
Literal prose translation by the Rev. J. Banks (Bohn, 1856), printed as prose: the plain-sense companion to Frere’s verse version. Banks’s hyphenated compounds are his own.
