Fragment XLVIII: Change for the worse is sooner understood
Translated by John Hookham Frere (1842; Bohn 1856) · From Fragments of Theognis (Frere, 1842)
Change for the worse is sooner understood,
And sooner practis’d, than from bad to good.
Do not advise and school me! good, my friend!
I’m past the time to learn—I cannot mend.
The next treats of that useless and interminable a;
“ Whose fault it was?”
