Fragment LXIV: Schemes unadvisable and out of reason
Translated by John Hookham Frere (1842; Bohn 1856) · From Fragments of Theognis (Frere, 1842)
Schemes unadvisable and out of reason
Are best adjourn’d—wait for a proper season!
Time and a, fair conjuncture govern all.
Hasty ambition hurries to a fall;
A fall predestin’d and ordain’d by heaven:
By a judicial blindness madly driven,
Mistaking and confounding good and evil,
Men lose their senses, as they leave their level.
