The Mother's House

by Tukaram 1608–1649

Translated by Nicol Macnicol (1919) · From Psalms of Maratha Saints (1919)

Religion

As the bride looks back to her mother's house,
And goes, but with dragging feet;
So my soul looks up unto thee and longs,
That thou and I may meet.

As a child cries out and is sore distressed,
When its mother it cannot see,
As a fish that is taken from out the wave,
So 'tis, says Tuka, with me.
