Tukaram
Tukaram (1608-49) was a Marathi poet-saint of the village of Dehu, near Pune, and the most popular of the Varkari devotional poets of Maharashtra. A devotee of Vithoba (Vitthal) of Pandharpur, he composed many short songs (abhangs) in plain Marathi, addressed to God as mother, father and friend, and often turned against pride, hypocrisy and empty ritual.
These seventy-six hymns are Nicol Macnicol's verse renderings in Psalms of Maratha Saints (1919), in The Heritage of India series; each abhang is cited there to the Indu Prakash edition of Tukaram's works.
