A Steadfast Mind

by Tukaram 1608–1649

Translated by Nicol Macnicol (1919) · From Psalms of Maratha Saints (1919)

Religion

Honour, dishonour that men may pay,
Bundle them up and throw them away.

Where there is ever a steadfast mind,
There thou the vision of God shalt find.

Whereso the fountains of peace abide,
Stayed is the passage of time and tide.

Calm thou the impulse that stirs thy breast;
Surely, says Tuka, a small request.
