The Name of the Living One
Translated by Nicol Macnicol (1919) · From Psalms of Maratha Saints (1919)
Hear, O God, my supplication, —
Do not grant me Liberation.
'Tis what men so much desire;
Yet how much this joy is higher!
Home of every Vaisnavite,
See, with glow of love alight!
By their door with folded hands
Full Attainment waiting stands.
Heavenly joy is not for me,
For it passeth speedily;
But that name how strangely dear
That in songs of praise we hear!
Yea, thou, dark as clouds that lower,
Knowest not thine own name's power.
Ah, says Tuka, it is this
Makes our lives so full of bliss.
