Living

Riddle 19

by Carolyn Wells 1862–1942

From At the Sign of the Sphinx (Second Series)

Living

An old philosopher was my last,
And his wife was my first in the distant past.

Select two sticks that are smooth and straight,
Lay them with care and precision great,
One north and south, one east and west,
They are my whole, it must be confessed.
