William Cullen Bryant

1794–1878

William Cullen Bryant (1794–1878) was an American poet and long-time editor of the New York Evening Post, whose meditative nature poetry helped establish a distinctly American Romantic voice.

Written when he was only seventeen, ‘Thanatopsis’ remains his best-known work, and poems such as ‘To a Waterfowl’ and ‘The Prairies’ celebrate the American landscape with a solemn, elevated calm.
