Murdoch O'Daly (Muredach Albanach)

born late 12th century

Murdoch O'Daly, called Murdoch “the Scotchman” (Muredach Albanach) on account of his affection for Scotland, is described in Eleanor Hull's The Poem-Book of the Gael as born in Connaught towards the close of the twelfth century.

The three poems gathered here are religious and monastic verses: a consecration, a prayer to the Trinity and a poem on his shaving as a monk, when he entered the monastic life together with Cathal of the Red Hand, King of Connaught. Their English versions are by Eleanor Hull and by Standish Hayes O'Grady, from Hull's anthology (1913).
