Namdev

14th century

Namdev (Nama) is one of the earliest and most widely loved saint-poets of Maharashtra, whom Macnicol places in the 14th century. A devotee of Vithoba (Vitthal) of Pandharpur, he is often counted among the circle of Jnanesvar, and his Marathi songs (abhangs) are sung to this day by pilgrims on the road to Pandharpur.

The twelve hymns here are drawn from Macnicol's Psalms of Maratha Saints (1919), which cites Avate's edition of the poet for most of them.

  1. "Gone Are the Saints"
  2. The Heart's Desire
  3. "O Haste and Come"
  4. A Vow
  5. One Thing
  6. A Bitter Cry
  7. Seeking
  8. "My Mother Thou"
  9. The Men of Faith
  10. The Reign of Peace
  11. "Who Vasudev in All Can See"
  12. Illumination
