Quatrain XLV

by Abu al-Ala al-Ma'arri 973–1057

Translated by Henry Baerlein (1909) · From The Diwan of Abu'l-Ala (1909)

Religion

The riddles of our life, when I would soar
Against the cruel secrets of the door,
So that I fell to deeper loneliness.
