Caesares: Quatrains XIX. — Helvius Pertinax
Translated by Hugh G. Evelyn-White (1919–21) · From Book XIV. — Ausonius on the Twelve Caesars
Helvius, chosen by the Senate's verdict and decree, a prince proclaimed by statute, not by favour, thou! This angered the treacherous bodyguard, once their delusion was made plain, for the Senate had yielded place to the army in authority.
This translation is printed as prose in its source edition.
